Moved on to 6 3450 RPM bench grinder amp; wolverine system, been using that set up for over twenty years. Only tip have for you is use a light touch when sharpening your tools whether use belt sander or bench grinder.

These machines are cheap, widely available and surprisingly capable for home shop use. The smaller machines with 1 wide belts dont have enough width to grind a tool evenly, the platen is too flexible, the belts wear too quickly, and coarser belts are harder to find.

I drilled out the shallow holes 4 1/4 from belt to support the home made jig I put the tool in. I had previously built the jig to hold the lathe tool and this also came from Capt Eddie. I wanted a different grind on one of my tools so I placed the tool in the jig and placed against the belt at the desired angle.

A Tool Grinding Rest. Accurate grinding of the required faces can more easily be achieved with an adjustable grinding rest. The photo on the right shows a simple grinding rest which is only angle adjustable (not height) and it has a sliding fence which can be used to hold the cutter at a set angle as it travels across the edge of the grinding wheel.

Grind a 15 degree side and end relief angle, a 15 degree side rake angle and use about 10 degrees of back rake. Note that the side cutting edge angle is zero so you approach the belt with the tool bit parallel to the platen and stop grinding when the cut reaches the top of the tool.
