Ebonyi State is one of the States in Nigeria that is endowed with solid minerals including lead ores. Unregulated mining in Ebonyi State started with the mining of leadzinc (PbZn) ore in 1925 (2) and since then Pb mining has progressed tremendously because of its high demand.
This study assessed the effects of leadzinc mining on water and soil quality in Ameka mining area of Ezza South, Ebonyi State, Nigeria using standard protocols.
The Nigerian LeadZinc Mining Company (1956) gave a conservative indicated ore reserve of 693,000 tons with 9% lead and 7% zinc for the Ameri and Nyeba leadzinc reserves. Leadzinc mineralization has been found to be associated with calcareous shales and shaly limestone in the Abakaliki field.
