1/12/1974#0183;#32;Because the pulp mill is in a deep valley with a very slight wind movement, pollutants tend to concentrate near their source, and the pulp mill is the major source of air polhltion in this valley. The lichen Xanthoria fallax is the most common epiphyte on Robinia pseudoacacia in this area and occurs with species of Rinodina, Lecanora, Physconia and Physcia as close as 12 km from the pulp mill.
8/11/2019#0183;#32;In order to identify a cancer cluster associated with environmental contamination, more data is needed, the letter said. Further studies could include the possible effects of exposure to sulfur dioxide, PCBs, dioxins and other contaminants associated with pulp and paper mills in the Frenchtown, Arlee and Missoula areas.

At a January 2006 public meeting, the local Air Pollution Control Officer testified that the mill''s annual emission of particulate matter was 230 tons.
2. Prediction of adverse impacts from air emissions from a pulp mill requires highquality scientific modelling. Any model is only as good as data input number of monitoring stations, position of monitoring stations, nature of model etc. 3. The potential adverse health and environmental effects from a new pulp mill will be strongly
The Concerned Citizens for a Quality Environment (CCQE) was organized in the fall of 1973 in Missoula County, Montana. The organization was in direct response to the announcement by the HoernerWaldorf Corporation of their planned expansion of their kraft pulp mill.
1/7/2003#0183;#32;Virtually nothing is known so far about long distance effects of the emission ofnitrogen compounds on lichens. Although a relatively large proportion of emitted NH 3 is known to be deposited as NH 3 close to the source ( c . 10% within a 100m downwind distance), it is a common misconception that NH 3 emissions do not disperse very widely.
Most studies dealing with health effects of kraft pulp mill odors are inconclusive. The studies show that populations in the area of an uncontrolled kraft pulp mill are annoyed by the odor, and that shortterm effects (vomiting, headaches, shortness of breath, dizziness) occur in
Lichen biomass fumigated by gaseous emissions from a krafttype pulp mill was reduced over a distance of 16 km. Biomass was inversely related to total sulfur content.

15/10/2012#0183;#32;This Pulp Pollution Primer explains the basic facts of pulp mill pollution, presents alternatives, and examines industrys resistance to change. Pulp pollution remains a serious problem. The pulp and paper industry is one of the largest and most polluting industries in the world; it is the third most polluting industry in North America.
